AAPU sets up committee to investigate certificate racketeering in Cotonou Varsity

The Association of African Private Universities (AAPU) has commended the Nigerian Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman for resolving to investigate certificate racketeering in some universities.

The Deputy Secretary of the Association, (West Africa), Salissou Mamoudou, made the commendation in a statement issued in Nouakchott, Mauritania on Saturday.

He said the bold steps taken by the Nigerian Minister of Education to investigate the issue, would go a long way in facilitating and promoting International Certification standards as well as restore the confidence of students and parents.

He said AAPU as an international forum for African Private Universities is ready to support the Minister of education in his determined effort to checkmate the activities of those universities that have no regard for their integrity and that of other sister universities in the African continent.

“AAPU as a forum that encourages and empowers member institutions to become Centre of Excellence in Research and Development, will support whatever measures taken by the Minister to save the reputation of Private universities in Africa,” he said.

While urging the government of Benin Republic to take necessary measures to check the ugly trend, the Deputy Secretary of the association also called on the Nigerian Minister of Education not to use the report as a yardstick for judging other reputable universities in Africa.

“The report should not be a yardstick to brand other universities as the same because there are reputable universities in Benin Republic, ” he said.

He disclosed that AAPU would also dispatch a fact finding committee to Cotonou with a view to finding out what exactly happened after which it would come out with a comprehensive report on the committee’s findings.

He said the committee, which is expected to find out the truth about what happened, would submit its report to the association within the next 10 days to enable it brief officials of the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria.

The AAPU Deputy Secretary commended the Daily Nigerian online newspaper for exposing the certificate racketeering syndicate in the Cotonou university adding that the association would meet with the undercover reporter to thank him.

He called on the African Union to recognize the Newspaper by honoring the undercover report for doing “an excellent and patriotic job.

AAPU appoints Dr Salisou Mamoudou as Deputy Secretary General of AAPU

The President of Association of African Private Universities (AAPU), Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has named Dr. Salisou Mamoudou as the Deputy Secretary-General of the association.

The appointment letter was presented to Dr. Mamoudou on Saturday, 16th September, 2023, by Prof. Gwarzo at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano.

Recall that the association had recently appointed Prof. Abubakar Sadiq as its Secretary-General

In a remark shortly after presenting the letter, Prof. Gwarzo described the appointment as a well deserved one in view of the appointee’s wealth of experience in academia and internationalization.

Prof. Gwarzo used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to committing adequate resources with a view to promoting research culture and knowledge generation among member institutions.

According to him, AAPU was established to promote networking and experience sharing in teaching and learning in addition to designing a common vision for African higher education.

He reminded the new appointee on the importance of teamwork in the discharge of his official duties so as to move the association forward.

Responding, Dr. Mamoudou, who expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by Prof. Gwarzo, also gave assurance of his readiness to contribute his own quota towards the development of the association.

AAPU felicitates with Prof. Garba on appointment as pioneer VC of Kano Varsity

The President of the Association of African Private Universities (AAPU), Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has congratulated Prof. Abdulrashid Garba on his appointment as the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University (KHAIRU), Kano.

Prof. Gwarzo delivered the congratulatory message through the Association’s Secretary -General, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna, when he paid a courtesy visit to the University on Wednesday, 23rd August, 2023.

Prof. Gwarzo, who described the appointment of Prof. Garba as a well deserved appointment in view of his wealth of experience in the academia, expressed optimism that the appointee would undoubtedly guide the university to the path of excellence.

Speaking on the mandates of AAPU, Prof. Gwarzo said the association is committed to raising the quality of higher education in Africa, while making education accessible and affordable to all and sundry.

He said AAPU was established to promote networking and experience sharing in teaching and learning among member institutions in addition to fashioning out a common vision for African higher education.

Prof. Gwarzo, who is also the Founder of Maryam Abacha American Universities of Nigeria and Niger, spoke at length on the opportunities which member institutions stand to benefit such as obtaining research grants and funding.

With its secretariat based in Kano State, Nigeria, and liason office in Maradi, Niger Republic, Prof. Gwarzo said AAPU also has branches in different countries across the region.

Responding, Prof. Garba expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a singular honor done to him in person and the university as a whole.

He revealed that KHAIRU will start academic activities with 18 programs across 13 departments and four faculties.

Prof. Garba, who expressed satisfaction with the mandates of AAPU, said the university was ready to partner with the association as soon as all prerequisites are completed.

While reiterating commitment to collaborate with MAAUN for academic and research development, Prof. Garba noted that the partnership will go along way in
creating and nurturing high-quality links with other organisations across the globe.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director Communications, AAPU, Engr. Bashir Garba lauded the university’s readiness to providing quality education by putting in place state of the art facilities.

He also thanked the Management of KHAIRU for the warm reception accorded the team and wished the new VC a successful tenure.

AAPU names secretariat building after Senator Kwankwaso

The Association of African Private Universities (AAPU), has named its secretariat building after the former Governor of Kano State and Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general elections, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Kwankwaso, who unveiled the edifice on Saturday, 26th August, 2023, was in the company of the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, ably represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and many other chieftains of the party.

In a remark shortly after commissioning the building, the President of AAPU, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo disclosed that the edifice was named after Kwankwaso in recognition of his incredible contribution to the development of education in Nigeria.

Prof. Gwarzo, who commended Kwankwaso for the milestone recorded in bringing about educational revolution in Kano state while as governor, said history will continue to remember him as an education ambassador and reformer.

According to him, education remains a bedrock of human capital development, which gives people the opportunity to refine their intellectual capacity so that they can contribute their quota towards the development of the nation.

While tasking all well-to-do individuals in society to replicate Kwankwaso’s ideologies of building the people through educational empowerment, Prof. Gwarzo described him as a progressive and visionary leader.

Responding, Kwankwaso expressed immense gratitude to Prof. Gwarzo for considering him worthy of naming the edifice after him.

Highlighting the role of education in the promotion of socio-economic development, Kwankwaso lauded Prof. Gwarzo for his unprecedented feat as the founder of four international universities.

He noted that the establishment of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano, has not only provided job opportunities to the teeming number of unemployed persons in the state, but also provided a bustling research environment that produces innovations with valuable commercial applications.

Also speaking, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, who described Prof. Gwarzo, as an intelligent and progressive personality, thanked the leadership of AAPU for honoring the national leader of their party.

The governor expressed commitment to working in collaboration with Prof. Gwarzo in order to promote human capital development in the state.

He pledged that his government would continue with the educational policies of Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso so as to give the less privileged the opportunity to pursue their career in education.

Earlier in his welcome address, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr thanked Kwankwaso and his entourage for accepting the invitation despite his busy schedules.

In his votes of thanks, the Secretary – General of AAPU, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna took time to cite instances where Kwankwaso proved himself as a selfless politician who has passion in the promotion of public good.

Prof. Sadiq also lauded Prof. Gwarzo for his thoughtfulness to name the building after a selfless and visionary leader.

Prominent personalities that accompanied Kwankwaso were the NNPP National Chairman, Alhaji Abba Kawu, and the National Welfare Officer of the party, Alhaji Alkasim Almustapha among other party’s bigwigs.
