Experts Advocate Equity in Universities at AAPU Social Justice Webinar

The Association of African Private Universities, AAPU, has hosted a webinar to mark the 2026 World Day of Social Justice.

The event, titled “Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: A Social Justice Blueprint for Equitable Higher Education,” was held on Saturday, and streamed live on YouTube.

The webinar attracted academics, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Africa, reinforcing calls for sustained collaboration toward building fairer and more inclusive universities.

In his opening remarks, the Secretary-General of AAPU, Prof. Sadiq Haruna, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advancing inclusive policies within private universities across the continent.

He stressed the need for fairness, equal access, and institutional reforms.

The lead speaker, Dr. Abdullateef Wale Adeyemo, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Islamic University in Uganda, examined the legal and policy frameworks required to entrench social justice in African universities.

He emphasized the protection of vulnerable groups and the removal of structural barriers to access.

Among the discussants was Dr. Murtala Adogi Mohammad, Founder and Executive Director of the System Strategy and Policy Lab, who highlighted the importance of governance reforms and data-driven strategies in achieving equitable higher education.

Farhiya Mohamed, Director of Women and Social Affairs at the University of Kabridahar, spoke on gender inclusion and the need for stronger institutional support for female students and staff.

Also speaking was Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), who called for enhanced accountability and stronger collaboration between universities and civil society groups.

Prof. Muktar Imam, Directing Staff at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), linked inclusive education to national stability, noting that equitable institutions are critical to long-term development.

Speaking, the VP Admin of MAAUN, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar, discussed the critical role of university leadership in driving policies that foster fairness, strengthen diversity, and ensure equal opportunities for all members of the academic community.

In his remarks, Engr. Bashir Garba, commended the speakers and participants for their contributions to the discussion.

AAPU Convenes World Education Day 2026 Webinar on Innovation and Employability

The Association of African Private Universities (AAPU) successfully hosted a high-impact virtual webinar to commemorate World Education Day 2026, bringing together leading education stakeholders to deliberate on the future of innovation and graduate employability across Africa.

Held on 24th January 2026, the webinar was themed “Driving Educational Innovation and Employability Through African Private Universities” and attracted over 600 participants from 35 countries, including academics, policymakers, students, development partners, and private-sector stakeholders from Africa and beyond.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, President and Convener of AAPU, emphasized the growing responsibility of African private universities to move beyond traditional teaching models and focus on producing highly skilled, adaptable, and employable graduates through innovation-driven education. Represented by the AAPU Secretary-General, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna, Prof. Gwarzo highlighted the urgent need for institutions to align academic programmes with labour-market demands, industry expectations, and emerging global skills.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Sudhakar Kota, Vice-Chancellor of Hensard University, underscored the importance of curriculum reform, strong industry partnerships, and technology-enabled learning models as critical pathways for improving graduate employability and workforce readiness in Africa.

Earlier sessions were led by Prof. Cherno Omar Barry, Dr. Zubaida Ahmad Nagee, and Engr. Muftawu Sanusi, with discussants drawn from the United States, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom. The panel examined policy coherence, learner-centred pedagogical models, digital transformation, and infrastructure development as core drivers of sustainable educational innovation.

Speaking during his session, Prof. Cherno Omar Barry called on African private universities to leverage diverse global education models and best practices to transform teaching and learning outcomes. He stressed that institutions must move beyond producing certificate-holding graduates to nurturing competent professionals, problem-solvers, entrepreneurs, and future employers who can actively contribute to economic growth and job creation.

In her presentation, Dr. Zubaida Ahmad Nagee highlighted the significant progress made in recent years, particularly in advancing women’s access to education across Africa. She further emphasized the importance of recognizing the informal sector as a key driver of economic development, noting that education plays a vital role in equipping individuals with practical skills that support entrepreneurship, community development, and inclusive growth.

Contributing to the digital transformation discourse, Engr. Muftawu Sanusi spoke on the theme of “Building Digital-First African Private Universities: Infrastructure as the Backbone of Innovation and Employability.” He emphasized the need for institutions to invest in modern digital infrastructure, smart campuses, learning management systems, data platforms, and secure connectivity to enable blended learning, remote collaboration, skills-based training, and technology-driven innovation ecosystems that prepare students for the digital economy.

Among the featured speakers, Dr. Habib Awais, Vice President (Administration) at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), spoke on the importance of robust institutional governance, transparent administration, and efficient management systems in creating an enabling environment for innovation and sustainable academic growth.

Similarly, Dr. Abdullahi Garba, Coordinator of General Education at MAAUN, emphasized the value of broad-based general education in equipping students with critical thinking abilities, adaptability, communication skills, and lifelong learning competencies required in today’s dynamic labour market.

In separate remarks, Dr. Salisu Muhammad, Executive Director of the Africa Institute for Solutions and Development, called for deeper collaboration between universities, industry players, policymakers, and development institutions to bridge the gap between academic training and workforce requirements. Meanwhile, Engr. Bashir Garba, Head of Communications at AAPU, highlighted the strategic role of effective communication, digital outreach, and knowledge dissemination in amplifying innovation efforts and strengthening the visibility of private universities across the continent.

The webinar also featured a dynamic contributors’ panel and an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to share perspectives, best practices, and policy recommendations aimed at strengthening Africa’s higher education ecosystem.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna, AAPU Secretary-General, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting quality assurance, relevance, innovation, and institutional excellence across African private universities. He further reiterated AAPU’s resolve to continue creating platforms that foster collaboration, capacity building, and policy engagement in support of sustainable educational development across the continent.

AAPU President Tours NEU, Commends Achievements

North-Eastern University (NEU), Gombe, on Sunday hosted the Founder and President of the Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN) Group, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, who also serves as the President of the African Private Universities Association (APUA). The courtesy visit was aimed at strengthening friendship and institutional collaboration between both institutions.

Prof. Gwarzo, accompanied by senior management officials, was received at the NEU Senate Chamber by the University’s Pro-Chancellor and Founder, Dr. Sani Jauro, and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yusuph Amuda Yahaya. Dr. Jauro described the visit as “a great honour” and a testament to the growing alliances shaping Nigeria’s higher education sector. He commended Prof. Gwarzo for his outstanding contributions to educational development across Africa.

Shortly after the formal reception, the NEU leadership led the delegation on a comprehensive tour of the University’s state-of-the-art facilities, including modern lecture theatres, laboratories, the digital library, student hostels, the Anas Aremeyaw Anas Multimedia & Innovation Centre, and other academic and administrative units.

Prof. Gwarzo expressed deep admiration for the rapid progress achieved by NEU within just three years of establishment. With an enrolment of over 2,000 students and impressive infrastructural growth, he said the University had distinguished itself as a rising force in Nigeria’s private higher education space.

“I am highly impressed by what I have seen today,” he said. “North-Eastern University has achieved in three years what many institutions struggle to achieve in ten. The facilities, the organisation, the environment, and the overall standards here are exceptionally commendable. I congratulate the founder, the Vice-Chancellor, the management, and staff of this great University.”

He encouraged the institution to sustain its growth trajectory and reaffirmed APUA’s readiness to continue supporting innovative private universities across the continent.

The visit concluded with a group photograph and renewed commitments to deepen collaboration between NEU and the MAAUN Group.

The engagement further cements NEU’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing modern universities—driven by innovation, integrity and excellence.

AAPU President, Prof. Gwarzo congratulates Al-Istiqama Varsity on First Convocation

The President and Founder of MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo was among the notable personalities that attended the maiden convocation ceremony of Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Kano State, Nigeria.

Prof. Gwarzo, who doubled as President of Association of African Private Universities (AAPU), led the Management staff of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria to attend the convocation ceremony on Saturday in Sumaila.

He congratulated the Proprietor of Al-Istiqama University, Senator Abdulrahman Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila as well as the management and staff of the university for achieving the milestone.

He also congratulated the graduating students for completing their studies in the university and urged them to be good ambassadors of the institution and Nigeria wherever they find themselves.

In his address during the occasion, the proprietor of the university, Senator Abdurrahman Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila lauded Prof. Gwarzo for his continuous support to the university since its inception.

Among the management staff of MAAUN that accompanied Prof. Gwarzo to the convocation ceremony included President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr and Vice President Administration, Dr. Habib Awais Abubakar,

Others were Dr. Abba Jidda of MAAUN Maradi and Dr. Musa Lawal Jibia, among others.

A total of 162 students graduated from the university during the occasion.

AAPU President visits Baba-Ahmed University, Urges Collaboration Among Universities

The President of the Association of African Private Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to Baba-Ahmed University, Kano, to engage in discussions on the development and advancement of private universities in Africa.

Prof. Gwarzo led a distinguished delegation from Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), accompanied by the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr as well as top management staff of the University.

Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly received at the university’s open theater by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Tanko Idris, along with members of the university’s staff and student body.

Earlier in his remark, the Vice-Chancellor expressed profound appreciation to Prof. Gwarzo for his outstanding contributions to education and humanity, not only in Nigeria but across the African continent.

Prof. Tanko Idris further extended his gratitude to Prof. Gwarzo for the visit, describing it as a significant occasion that underscores his unwavering commitment to fostering collaboration and academic excellence.

He also offered prayers for Allah’s continued blessings upon Prof. Gwarzo, wishing him long life in good health to sustain his efforts in advancing education.

Responding, Prof. Gwarzo commended the Vice-Chancellor for his steadfast dedication to academic excellence and institutional development.

He also called for collaboration among universities to enhance research and innovation as well as to expose the universities to each other.

He further lauded the university’s management and its Founder, Datti Baba-Ahmed, for their remarkable contributions to the promotion of quality education.

Additionally, Prof. Gwarzo encouraged the university’s staff to continue supporting the Vice-Chancellor, expressing confidence in his leadership and vision for elevating the institution to greater heights.

During the visit, two students of the university conferred an award of excellence on Prof. Gwarzo in recognition of his exceptional contributions to education.

Among the entourage that accompanied Prof. Gwarzo during the courtesy visit included the President of MAAUN Kano, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, Dr. Abba Jidda and Dr. Musa Lawal Jibia, among others.

AAPU sets up committee to investigate certificate racketeering in Cotonou Varsity

The Association of African Private Universities (AAPU) has commended the Nigerian Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman for resolving to investigate certificate racketeering in some universities.

The Deputy Secretary of the Association, (West Africa), Salissou Mamoudou, made the commendation in a statement issued in Nouakchott, Mauritania on Saturday.

He said the bold steps taken by the Nigerian Minister of Education to investigate the issue, would go a long way in facilitating and promoting International Certification standards as well as restore the confidence of students and parents.

He said AAPU as an international forum for African Private Universities is ready to support the Minister of education in his determined effort to checkmate the activities of those universities that have no regard for their integrity and that of other sister universities in the African continent.

“AAPU as a forum that encourages and empowers member institutions to become Centre of Excellence in Research and Development, will support whatever measures taken by the Minister to save the reputation of Private universities in Africa,” he said.

While urging the government of Benin Republic to take necessary measures to check the ugly trend, the Deputy Secretary of the association also called on the Nigerian Minister of Education not to use the report as a yardstick for judging other reputable universities in Africa.

“The report should not be a yardstick to brand other universities as the same because there are reputable universities in Benin Republic, ” he said.

He disclosed that AAPU would also dispatch a fact finding committee to Cotonou with a view to finding out what exactly happened after which it would come out with a comprehensive report on the committee’s findings.

He said the committee, which is expected to find out the truth about what happened, would submit its report to the association within the next 10 days to enable it brief officials of the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria.

The AAPU Deputy Secretary commended the Daily Nigerian online newspaper for exposing the certificate racketeering syndicate in the Cotonou university adding that the association would meet with the undercover reporter to thank him.

He called on the African Union to recognize the Newspaper by honoring the undercover report for doing “an excellent and patriotic job.

AAPU President mourns Ex-UNN VC, Prof. Umaru Shehu

The President of the Association of African Private Universities (AAPU), Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has expressed deep shock over the passing away of a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, Prof. Umaru Shehu.

Prof. Shehu who was Northern Nigeria’s first professor of Community Health, died on Monday at the age of 97 in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In a condolence message on Monday, Prof. Gwarzo described the death of Prof. Shehu who was Professor Emeritus, Community Health, University of Maiduguri and former President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, as a great loss, not only to his immediate family and Borno State but to the entire academia.

Prof. Gwarzo also described the deceased as a very dedicated and hardworking distinguished scholar, whose contributions for decades left an indelible mark on the fields of medicine, education and research.

He said Prof. Shehu would continue to be remembered by the people of Borno and beyond for his enormous contributions to education and medicine.

“I wish to on behalf of the AAPU and Management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, Government and people of Borno State over the death of the erudite professor,” Prof. Gwarzo said.

He prayed to the Almighty Allah to bless the gentle soul of the deceased and reward his good deeds with the highest level of Jannah.

Prof. Gwarzo also prayed to Almighty Allah to comfort the family of the deceased and give them the courage to bear the huge loss.

AAPU President pays working visit to Greenfield University, Kaduna

The President of the Association of African Private Universities (AAPU), Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo on Tuesday paid a working visit to the Greenfield University in Kaduna.

Prof. Gwarzo was received on arrival by the top management staff of the University including its founder and Pro-Chancellor,
Engr./ Chief Simon Ifediora Nwakacha and Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Simon Daniel Katung.

During the visit, the AAPU President was conducted round some places in the university including laboratories, computer lab, sports centre, library and students hostels among other places.

In his remark, prof. Gwarzo who is also the founder of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria and Niger- Maradi as well as Franco-British International University, Kaduna and Canadian University of Nigeria, Abuja, commended the founder of Greenfield University for providing state of the art facilities in the institution.

He also expressed happiness on the physical development witnessed by the university at its present location despite the challenges faced at the permanent site.

The AAPU President also commended the management of the university for giving admission to students from across the 36 states of the federation.

Responding, the Founder and Pro-Chancellor of the university, Engr./ Chief Simon Ifediora Nwakacha appreciated the AAPU President for finding time to visit the university despite his tight schedules.

Other management staff of the university that received the AAPU President during the visit were .Mrs Joy Nwakacha, wife of the pro-chancellor/member, BOT, Dr. Valentine Nwakacha, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology/member BOT and Malam Sadiq Nuhu, Coordinator, IJMB.

AAPU appoints Dr Salisou Mamoudou as Deputy Secretary General of AAPU

The President of Association of African Private Universities (AAPU), Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has named Dr. Salisou Mamoudou as the Deputy Secretary-General of the association.

The appointment letter was presented to Dr. Mamoudou on Saturday, 16th September, 2023, by Prof. Gwarzo at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano.

Recall that the association had recently appointed Prof. Abubakar Sadiq as its Secretary-General

In a remark shortly after presenting the letter, Prof. Gwarzo described the appointment as a well deserved one in view of the appointee’s wealth of experience in academia and internationalization.

Prof. Gwarzo used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to committing adequate resources with a view to promoting research culture and knowledge generation among member institutions.

According to him, AAPU was established to promote networking and experience sharing in teaching and learning in addition to designing a common vision for African higher education.

He reminded the new appointee on the importance of teamwork in the discharge of his official duties so as to move the association forward.

Responding, Dr. Mamoudou, who expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by Prof. Gwarzo, also gave assurance of his readiness to contribute his own quota towards the development of the association.
